Many journeys start with a cup of tea and a chat.  I was having lunch with Fiona and Astrid.  We had been in Rwanda together as part of the Global Learning Partnerships Project in 2016. It was lovely to see them both and catch up on news.  Astrid asked if I would consider another African Project, as part of my career break (which I was thoroughly enjoying!).  I agreed that I would love to.  But the problem was that many volunteer opportunities in education were for classroom helpers or required a year long commitment.  As a Head Teacher, I felt that I had a broader skills set to share and I couldn’t commit to a year without my husband concluding that I                                                                                                    had left him!

Fiona mentioned Osiligi Charity projects.  She has been involved with them for years.  They support education within the Maasai community in Kenya.  Each year a group of warriors visit the UK as part of their fund-raising for the school.  They have even been to Scotland. Perhaps the charity would have a use for me.

She provided the contact details for Roger, one of the directors.  I sent an introductory email. We corresponded back and forth.  The Head Teacher, Bonface, of Osiligi Obaya Primary School was brought into the conversation. Before long, it was agreed.  I was going to Kenya for 4 weeks in March 2018, for an initial visit to support the teachers and head Teacher with the introduction of the new Kenyan curriculum.

Never underestimate the power and the possibilities of a cup of tea!
