The Coincidence

While sitting in the car, stuck in a flood, with Bonface, Teacher Caspa, Teacher Catherine and 2 babies, there was some small talk as we waited for the rain to stop and the water to subside.

Bonface explained that he stayed in school at the weekend because his home town was very far away.  It was near the border with Uganda.  It took at least 14 hours to reach so it was only possible to go home during the school holidays.  I mentioned that I had worked in Uganda in 2012, in a small rural school near Masindi.

Bonface exclaimed that his home was only 30 minutes across the border from Masisndi. What was the school?

I explained that it was very remote and very rural – it was called Kinumi Primary.

Bonface knew the school.  In fact, he knew the Head Teacher, Moses, very well.  He was his cousin!

Moses was the Head Teacher that I had worked with for 5 weeks, during my placement, six years ago.

So, I have worked in 1 school in Uganda and 1 school in Kenya and the Head Teachers are cousins. What are the chances?

It is astonishing how big the world is and yet how small it is at the same time.
