After a ridiculously early flight from Glasgow, a meet up with Helen and Roger (charity directors) and a pleasant flight from Amsterdam,  I arrived in Nairobi on Sunday night.  There was a very slight hitch when it turned out that I didn’t actually have the correct visa documentation and could either be refused entry or have to apply and pay all over again, but it was nothing that a bit of Scottish blag couldn’t handle. We negotiated our way out of the airport with excess luggage (school supplies), avoiding taxi touts and pickpockets, to discover it was raining.  it would appear the rainy season has arrived a month earlier than expected which is good news for the crops and animals but bad news for any suntan plans.  We were collected by Richard, a school board member, who drove us to Olepolos.

It had been arranged that we would all spend the first night in his guest house because of our late arrival.  I would move to school accommodation the next day. We arrived at 1am and squelched through the mud for the few short steps to the house. A quick wash and then straight to bed.

Next morning, after breakfast we headed to the school compound which is just next door. The track was like a muddy riverbed and our shoes were caked by the time we arrived. Luckily, I had sandals in my bag.

The day was a whirlwind of meeting Bonface (HT) all the teachers and trying to figure out who was in which room.  All the classrooms are named after birds.

I was invited to deliver assembly.  Luckily I was prepared. Kids and staff are so welcoming.  I’m looking forward to working here!

A travel story from Margaret without a visa/passport/authorities dilemma would not be the same! Scottish blag wins the day …….. again!
